A fund is a promise kept in a name: a family, a graduating class, a business, a teacher who is remembered every May. Staff keep this register in WordPress; the Scholarships page and the home page read from it.

Start a
fund
A name on the register, for as long as the foundation exists.
Most funds start after a retirement, a fiftieth reunion, or a loss. The foundation handles the investing, the matching, the reviewing and the paying; the family chooses the name and who it is for.
Endowed fundfrom $10,000
Invested with the foundation’s endowment. Each year the board sets a draw (4% in 2026) and the fund pays awards from it, in perpetuity. Gifts can be added at any time.
Fund given each yearfrom $1,000 a year
The donor gives the award amount each winter and it is paid out in full the following spring. Businesses, clubs and classes usually start here; several later endow.
- 01Tell us the name and who it is for. Any senior, a field, a trade, first in family, an activity. The board approves criteria so that every fund selects from a wide enough group and on a fair basis.
- 02Sign a one-page fund agreement. Name, criteria, amount, endowed or yearly, and what happens if the field disappears (the board may broaden the criteria, never the name).
- 03Give. By check, transfer, stock or from a donor-advised fund. You receive a written acknowledgment for each gift and a giving summary every January.
- 04Your name joins the register. Staff add the fund here; it appears on the Scholarships page the day its first window opens, and its first recipient is read at commencement in May.

The foundation cannot give tax advice. Whether and how a gift is deductible is set out by the IRS in Charitable contributions; your own adviser can say what it means for you. Donors do not select recipients — selection is the board’s, by the criteria, as the IRS requires of a public charity.
